Desert Rose, Meaning, Properties, and Facts

Gypsum · CaSO4·2H2OMohs 2Monoclinic

A desert rose crystal is a rose-shaped cluster of flat gypsum or barite blades that grew in sand and trapped the sand inside. Below: its properties, where it forms, the gypsum and barite kinds, how to tell real from fake, how to care for it and the meaning people give it.

What is desert rose

Desert rose is a crystal cluster, not a flower or a single crystal: thin, flat blades of gypsum or barite that grew outward from a center while buried in sand, swallowing sand grains as they went. That sand is why a desert rose looks tan, cream or rusty instead of clear, and why "desert rose stone" feels gritty in the hand. The name also belongs to a succulent houseplant, Adenium obesum; this page is about the mineral.

Desert rose properties

Desert rose properties depend on which mineral built it. Gypsum roses are very soft (a fingernail scratches them) and fairly light, while barite roses are harder and feel surprisingly heavy, because barium is a heavy element. Data on the gypsum form is on Mindat's selenite page:

MineralGypsum (selenite variety) or barite, with sand
ChemistryGypsum CaSO4·2H2O; barite BaSO4
Color causeTrapped sand grains
HardnessGypsum 2; barite 3 to 3.5
Crystal systemGypsum monoclinic; barite orthorhombic
LusterDull and sandy; glassy on clean blade edges
Specific gravityGypsum about 2.3; barite about 4.5
Main localitiesSahara (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco), Chihuahua (Mexico), central Oklahoma
Water safeNo: gypsum slowly dissolves
Sun safeYes

Where desert rose is found

Desert rose is found where mineral-rich water moved through sand and left gypsum or barite to crystallize between the grains, most often in dry basins where salty groundwater rises and evaporates. Gypsum roses come from the Sahara, especially Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, and from Chihuahua, Mexico, the source of many of the pale roses in shops. Barite roses, called rose rocks, come from central Oklahoma, where the rose rock is the official state rock.

Desert rose selenite vs barite rose

Desert rose selenite and barite rose look alike, but weight gives them away. Gypsum desert roses, sold as desert rose selenite, have thin, sharp-edged petals in tan to cream, while barite rose rocks have thicker, rounder petals, reddish brown from Oklahoma's iron-stained sandstone, and feel much heavier for their size. Both hold a lot of sand, so neither shines like clear selenite.

How to tell if desert rose is real

How to tell if desert rose is real is mostly easy, because desert roses are common and inexpensive enough that faking them rarely pays. Real ones feel gritty, shed a little sand and show thin crystal blades with sand inside them, not glued on top. Watch for broken roses glued back together, glue where separate clusters were joined, and dyed or painted pieces sold under fancy names.

Desert rose care: water and sun

Desert rose care means no water. Gypsum dissolves slowly in water, so a soak, or even repeated rinses, rounds off the petals and loosens the sand until the rose starts to fall apart; barite roses handle water better but still trap dirt. Dust it with a soft, dry brush or a puff of air, and keep it out of steamy bathrooms. Sun is fine. The water safe crystals guide lists other stones to keep dry.

Desert rose meaning

Desert rose meaning, in crystal lore, is calm and letting go, tied to the idea of something beautiful growing in a harsh place. That is belief, not chemistry. Oklahoma has its own story: a legend told there links the reddish rose rocks to the Cherokee and the Trail of Tears. The science is just as good: each petal is a flat crystal that grew around grains of sand as desert water dried.

Desert rose for sale on geoslut arrives in drops: each piece is one of one, photographed in daylight, with the mineral and locality on its label, and the list hears about every drop first.

Desert Rose FAQ

Is desert rose water safe?

Desert rose is not water safe: gypsum slowly dissolves, so water rounds the petals and loosens the sand.

Is desert rose the same as selenite?

Desert rose is the same mineral as selenite when it is made of gypsum, but it grows as sandy blades instead of clear crystals. Barite roses are a different mineral.

Where does desert rose come from?

Desert rose comes from dry, sandy places where groundwater evaporates, mainly the Sahara, Chihuahua in Mexico and, for barite rose rocks, central Oklahoma.

Is desert rose a real crystal?

Desert rose is a real crystal formation, a natural cluster of many gypsum or barite crystals, not a single crystal and not man-made.
